How to Eat for Longevity, the Indian way!

Think only a Mediterranean diet can support Longevity? An Indian nutrition expert shows us how we can eat Indian and eat healthy. Plus, get her list of affordable, but nutritious food swaps.

“No single diet can guarantee longevity.

Patterns matter. How you combine different foods matters.”

That was the first thing Dr Subashree Ray told me when I asked her if the Indian diet could support our longevity goals. What is important, as she told me, is to ‘eat right’.

Sounds familiar? Yes. You did read about a similar finding from new research here in an April issue of Never Too Late. But here’s the thing, I had this conversation with Subashree almost a month before that research paper was published.

Which brings us back to the million-dollar question:

How do you ‘Eat Right’?

I put the question to Subashree who not only has a Ph.D. in Clinical Nutrition; her day job is literally designing wellness programmes for employees at one of India’s biggest auto companies. Previously, she was tasked with planning nutritious, well-balanced meals for the workforce of one of India’s biggest conglomerates.

Yeah, Dr Subashree Ray, Section Head, Wellness, TVS Motor Company sure knows a thing, or two, about eating right and eating on a budget, all while catering to Indian tastebuds.

Here’s an ‘amuse-bouche’, if you will, from the conversation we had:

  • You don’t have to rob a bank to eat healthy.

  • An Indian meal can be as nutritious as a Mediterranean meal.

  • Eat more of whole, plant-based foods. Eat fruits every day. Eat proteins.

  • You cannot completely eliminate sugar or fats from your diet. In fact, you need some amount of healthy fats.

  • Superfoods will help you, only when combined with a balanced diet.

  • Portions matter.

In fact, Subashree also shared an easy hack to ensure you are eating the right food in the right proportions. Trust me, this will take all the guesswork out of portion control and no, it does not involve a weighing scale.

But, I will not reveal any more. If you want the full ‘thali’ experience, stream the interview right here, on Substack. You could also watch it on YouTube or Spotify.

Tune in to get your list of

  • Foods to eliminate from your diet

  • Building blocks of a healthy, affordable Indian plate

  • Foods you must eat every day to prevent disease and boost long-term health

  • Simple, budget-friendly Indian food swaps

That’s not all.

I did promise you a feast!

This conversation is merely part 1 of a 3-part series on Nutrition and Longevity.

Watch out for two more podcast episodes where Subashree tells us how to meet our protein needs on a veg/non-veg Indian diet, and how to eat healthy on a budget.

So if you are new here, consider hitting the button below. That way you will get a nice, little email from me when those episodes drop.

For now, tune in. Let’s get our Longevity thali right, yeah?

See you Monday!
